We recently stopped by the Hobbico offices where we handed off the latest Basher Approved Award for the Team Durango DEX408v2 Buggy. Scott Cramer did the honors of accepting the award for the Durango folks while we were in town.
The DEX408v2 has been hard to pry from Cubby’s hands. When he called it one of the best jumping vehicles he has ever driven, he wasn’t kidding! The Durango kit has been his go to buggy for a while now, and we decided any vehicle that can have that sort of effect on Cubby as well as the rest of us here, must be special!
Curious what it takes to get a Basher Approved Award? You can read all about them Right Here and also see who else has won the prestigious award.

Congrats to Team Durango, keep up the great work!
It’s Friday! Happy 4th of July everyone! Check out the BSRC Mystery Link.
It’s time to hand out another Basher Approved Award. This time up we have the Futaba 4PL! We have had a 4PL around the office for a while now, and it’s been great. It’s taken a beating in and out of pit boxes, been dropped on the floor a half a dozen times, sometimes on purpose, and it just keeps going. You can read our original Futaba 4PL Review right there.

Around the end of November a buzz starts to happen around the office. People start chatting, discussing, then arguing about what vehicles should be considered for our “BASH VEHICLE of the YEAR” award. This years decision was EXTREMELY close. Last years winner, the Thunder Tiger MT4 was a little easier to settle on, but this year there were two standouts. It was so close, we had to go to the white board and list off the good and the bad to get a better idea of a clear winner. Even then there were people on both sides of the fence.
All that being said, we’d like to congratulate ARRMA RC on the ARRMA GRANITE as winning our BASH VEHICLE of the YEAR 2012! The Granite proved basically indestructible as you can check out in our Beat Down VIDEO, and it also won the 2WD Monster Truck Shootout, and Basher Approved Status! It’s at a great price point, and a awesome vehicle to get into the hobby with that will bring smiles to many backyard bashers.
Props to the runner up. In a VERY close second was the ECX Torment! The Torment has been a great go-to vehicle for the last year, but there were just a few more things keeping it from winning. It is also a great truck, and you can’t really go wrong with choosing one. There are a lot of companies that should take a look at the durability of this short course!
Other considerations were the Axial EXO and Atomik 1/18 Metal Mulisha Rally Car. Both great vehicles that saw a lot of use this year.
Congrats again to ARRMA RC and their awesome monster truck, the ARRMA GRANITE!
Yes, it has been a while, but we don’t just hand these things out to anyone who wants to toss us cash like the other industry awards. The Basher Approved award is probably one of the most sought after awards in the RC world because companies actually have to EARN it! It’s our stamp of approval, and we take this thing pretty seriously now a days.
I’d like to take a moment and congratulate two companies on their products that have made our prestigious list. First is the ARRMA Granite. Not only did this truck win our 2WD Monster Truck Shootout, but it backed up it’s toughness with an insane crash and bash beat down video while we were trying to destroy it.
Next the ECX Torment short course truck. You can read our Updated Review Here to get our overall opinion, but the short version is this truck is indestructible. We have been beating on this truck for months, and it does not even blink. I feel sorry for the hobby shop that bought a bunch of parts to have in stock for people, because they aren’t going to be selling them any time soon.

We have been
arguing discussing what vehicle we thought deserves the honor of Big Squid RC’s Bash Vehicle of the Year for a while now. A lot of great vehicles have driven over our desks this year, and while I think it was close between several, one really stood out.
Thunder Tiger MT4-G3 Monster Truck
This year’s winner of Bash Vehicle of the Year
goes to the Thunder Tiger MT4-G3
1/8th scale monster truck. It was darn near indestructible while being launched off dozens of huge ramps, super fast out of the box with the ability to run on 4S or 6s, and it was just a beast of a machine all around! Congratulations Thunder Tiger for making an awesome truck! You can read our full review HERE
I mentioned the decision was close.. the other two vehicles that we have been going back and forth with were the Traxxas Stampede 4×4 (see our review here) which brought us a lot of back flipping skate park enjoyment this year. You can see our video of it in action HERE.
The other close contender was the Speed Passion RS2. (check our review here) For it’s insane $99 sale price tag, with a brushless motor and 2.4GHz radio system! It was truly the budget basher! Heck it was like buying a brushless system and getting a truck and radio for free!
If you are looking to do some serious bashing, you can’t really go wrong with any of the 3 vehicles above, now get out there and bash!
We take our BASHER APPROVED award very seriously around here, and it’s rare when we hand one out. That being said, we would like to congratulate the Sunshine Systems folks on their LED Ground Effects Kit getting the latest award. You can read our full review of light kit here.
We have seen a good handful of light systems pass through the office, and none have taken the beatings that these have. If you need to add some serious bling to your ride, make sure to check out the Sunshine Systems site for details, and our review.
So we just updated the Basher Approved section with two new entries. I’ll let you read all about it in that section, but on the left is Scott Cramer accepting the award for the Duratrax Evader DT truck, and on the right in his best pose yet is Peter Vieira from Traxxas accepting the award for the Velineon Brushless System.
Both products have been amazing this year, and really deserved the award. Head over to the Basher Approved section for details!
While we were out at the Short Course Showdown we had a chance to hand out two more Basher Approved ™ awards. It’s always more fun to do these in person, then to just mail them out.
On the left is Erik Shauver from HPI Racing accepting the award for the HPI Blitz. He was one of the major designers behind the Blitz, and it was pretty cool to meet him, and have a little chat. On the right is John Schultz, also from HPI accepting the award for the HPI Savage XL. Both of these vehicles have really held up to some amazing abuse. We own three Blitz vehicles, and have barely busted a thing on them for months of abuse. The Savage XL is just a beast! Besides being super powerful and fun to drive, it’s really easy to work on, and brings a smile to our face every time we fire it up!
Congrats to HPI on two amazing vehicles.
As we were getting the web page updated, it occurred to me that while we have handed out a few Basher Approved ™ awards, we didn’t update the official page!
So we have updated the page giving the Traxxas Slash 2wd as well as the Team EDS Racing Tools the recognition they deserve. Check out the Basher Approved ™ page for explanations and other products!
Congratulations to both winners!
So, stopped by the Traxxas booth early day 1 to present them with an official Basher Approved Award for the Traxxas Slash. Without a doubt the Traxxas Slash is deserving of one of the highest RC awards right now. It’s cheap, it’s fun, and it takes a beating like nothing else! Peter Vieira did the accepting for Traxxas. The future will tell if the 4×4 can follow in it’s footsteps! Congrats Traxxas!
(Bigger more official write up coming once the show is over, and we can all breath again!)
While at the Traxxas booth, we had to check out the Traxxas Slash 4×4! Notice the Monster Max system in the second one! LOL.. that has to be insane!
Something we noticed while there.. check out the front skid setup on the 4×4 vs the original Slash. It’s a little slicker, and felt a little more durable. I like they way it’s more of a one smooth piece setup! (Slash 4×4 is on the left, original on right.)

It is with great pleasure that we can award RPM RC Products the first ever
Basher Approved Lifetime Achievement Award!
We feel that Richard (seen here accepting the award) and his group at RPM are the absolute ideal company creating amazingly durable products for the RC industry and bashers all over the world. Their products are designed and created for people exactly like us in mind, the people that like to push their RC vehicles that extra inch and take those chances. The parts are designed to be stronger and usually lighter then they stock parts they replace, and around the same cost! Any time we need a replacement part for a vehicle, we always check to see if there is a RPM part we can use because we trust their products, and we know if we go with RPM we probably won’t have to replace that same part again in the near future.
If you are unfamiliar with RPM RC Products make sure to head over to their site and check out what they have to offer. We have trusted their products for many years now, and can’t show our appreciation enough for their hard work and dedication to the RC Basher community!
Thanks RPM! You are truly deserving of this award!
We finally have our review up of the DuraTrax RT-X 27, and guess what.. it has officially gotten a Basher Approved rating! Head over to the RC Reviews section and check it out! If you are in the mood for a new RC Nitro truck this might be what you need! Read it here: DuraTrax RT-X 27 Review.
Big Squid Shirts are now available!!! The first ones available to the public are the ‘Basher Approved’ shirts! They look awesome! I tried to keep the prices as low as possible. Since they aren’t being mass produced.. they are not as cheap as I would of liked… but at the moment it’s the best we can do. Show your support and wear a Big Squid RC shirt! We have created a few different styles, even for kids and lady friends! If you choose the little faster process/shipping (2-5 day) they arrive very fast. If the shirts go over well, we will try and get new designs from our artist in the near future! Go to our new STORE HERE!
