As part of our extended show coverage, Brian asked me to write a few of my observations from The Show. So here’s the scoop as I saw it from my viewpoint…
The Up Sides-
Traxxas- Traxxas absolutely nailed the show. I’m not a huge fan, but I have to admire where they are sitting right now. They had an uber booth, then they had the Traxxas-Try-Me track, then also a large area showcasing their full scale 18 wheeler and one of their uber full scale TORC trucks, and lastly they put on some incredible demo’s on the BigSquid race track. Traxxas had race announcer to the stars Scotty Ernst on the mic, and even some celeb drivers like Joel Johnson wheel’n their new product around the track. Lastly, they saved a few cool new products to introduce at The Show. Props to Traxxas, they are living large, deservedly so.

Hobbico/Great Planes- Hobbico had an uber new booth this year, which was much better suited for consumers and dealers than the walled in unit they’d been using the last few years. As usual, they put a lot of time and effort into the expo, and it showed. They have a reputation for going the extra mile for their customers, showing up large at The Show means a lot not only to end consumers, but especially to their dealers.

Horizon- Horizon went bigger this year than usual, having a huge booth, and adding a try-me track and flight cage. They also brought in nearly an army of their employees to help out. Unfortunately for them, our BigSquid booth babes found their try-me track and absolutely wreaked havoc on it. Our girls would go full speed into one of their walls, only to go WFO directly backwards into another. The BigSquid booth babes must have been amazing to watch if you were a bi-stander, but had to be brutal on your patience if you were one of the Horizon guys work’n the track. Sorry guys, we’ll try to get booth babes that can wheel next year. :)

I wanted to take a moment and thank the team that helped make iHobby 2010 another amazing event! If you attended the show, I hope you had a chance to stop by and say hi! We talked to, what seemed like thousands of people, and tons of fans! Thanks for all your support! It was cool to see people in Big Squid RC shirts walking the show that were not just part of the team.

Seen here in the pic, from left to right… Wesley “Microman” Dennis, Tim Mohr, Klaudia Najbar, Jeff Hoy, Kate Krejci, Mandi Sula, Jim Swift, Brian Smolik, and Bill Stevens. Sadly, Jason Annis and Cubby are not pictured. We just couldn’t get everyone there at the same time it seemed.
Anyway, thanks so much to the team for all their help! Everyone did an amazing job for those five days, and once again we had the best demos and the most talked about booth! Every year I sit back and say ‘Wow, how the heck are we going to beat this next year?’ and this year, I think I really mean it! Guess I better get to work!

An example of why we use pro drivers during our bashing demos and keep the rookies out of it.

Again, I think this truck is the Dad’s prize more than the kids.  But I’m sure it’ll provide them with hours of family fun.

And the winner of our Microman edition Kyle Busch and Scott Speed autographed short course body.

Our last give-away of IHobby 2010 is the biggest.  We’re giving away a brand new Traxxas Slash 4×4 Ultimate to one lucky fan that screams louder than anyone else out there!  You gotta be here at our Bashing Demo at 3:00 pm to win though, so if you aren’t here yet, you better get here!

But that’s not all, our favorite guy, Wes “Microman” Dennis is giving away a Microman short course body for the Blitz, SC10, or Slash.  It’s prepainted with his paint scheme, logos, and real battle damage from serious racing action.  But wait, there’s more!  This body is actually autographed by not one, but TWO NASCAR Stars!  Kyle Busch and Scott Speed are good friends of the Microman and have raced with him on many occasions.  In fact, this body has been used to beat Kyle Busch in no less than Seven races!  Take that Kyle!

If you’re in the crowd you may also get a t-shirt or other Big Squid RC swag, and be sure to stop by our booth right next to the track to get stickers and chat with the gang.

We think the Dad is the one that’s really getting this truck.  You have one more chance to win if you’re here.  At 3:00 pm we’re giving away the Traxxas Slash 4×4 Ultimate.  You gotta be here and you gotta be LOUD!

Brian “The Squidinator” Smolik giving away a brand new Traxxas Mini Slash.  He loves giving stuff away!

There has been a ton of stuff from IHobby this year.  So much that we’re running around with chickens like our heads cut off just to cover it all.  So we may not be giving you everything you want to see or know.  If there’s anything you’ve seen on our site from the IHobby show that you’d like to see more of, please drop by the live chat on our Track Cam and let us know.  We may not be monitoring it the entire time, but we do check it frequently, so leave your requests for more pics or info in there and we’ll try our best to get to it.  Don’t be shy.

Follow this link for the Track Cam chat room.

Today at the IHobby show we’ll be giving away two more Traxxas trucks!  At our 11:00 am Bashing Demo we’ll be giving away this brand new Mini Slash.  In order to win it you gotta be here and screaming louder than everyone else.  We’ll also be giving away a Traxxas Slash 4×4 Ultimate at the 3:00 pm Bashing Demo.  So make sure you’re at our track at those times, or else you can’t win!

We at Big Squid are the very first r/c media group to get some wheel time with the Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies (not to be confused with Horizon Hobbies) H-Cell 2.0 hydrogen fuel cell powered r/c car (see the original product announcement here).  One of the things we’ve learned is that the car is not directly powered by the fuel cell, it is used as a range extender, providing a theoretical 1+ hour of extra run time to a common NiMH battery pack.  The system itself is pretty heavy, adding an extra 2+ pounds to the vehicle.  Our own Tim Mohr got to do the honors, but didn’t get much time to run it during the show, it was at the last minutes of Saturday when the lights were getting shutoff, BUT we’ve been promised by the company that when the show closes Sunday evening and we’re packing out all of our gear from our booth, THIS CAR will be in our hands.  We’ll be the only media group to have one in our possession for testing and review.  And we’ll have it all right here in the coming couple months after we give it a very thorough going over.

I think we turned that frown upside-down with this one.  Who says being a fan doesn’t pay off?  These were the winners of our 1/10 scale Traxxas Slash Give-away.  You can have your chance too, just be at the IHobby Show on Sunday for our Bashing Demos.  The first one is at 11:00 am and we will be giving away another Mini Slash.  And at the 3:00 pm demo we’ll be giving away the biggest and best of them all, a brand new Traxxas Slash 4×4 Ultimate edition!

The IHobby doors open at 10:00 am, arrive early to beat the traffic.

That’s our guys, Wesley “Microman” Dennis, and Brian “Dear Leader” Smolik judging the crowd to see who gets to win.  If you want to win you have to be screaming your head off louder than everyone else out there!  Can’t win if you don’t make some noise!

We got a request for more pictures of the Traxxas Spartan (formerly the Titan), so here’s a gallery for y’all. Click the little ones for the big ones.

The Traxxas Short Course Hauler isn’t open to the public, but Big Squid got a tour.  The Traxxas gang is using it at the IHobby show for a staging and work area for their demo vehicles.  The pictures are more interesting than any words I can come up with, so click through after the break for more.
