Life is tough in the newspaper and magazine industries. Actually, most industries are having it rough during our economy, but the print guys have really been suffering. Nearly every week you learn about another big name newspaper or mag calling it quits. Finally those tough times have hit us in the rc world.

I have long said that 4 mags for the rc hobby were too many. For the amount of participants we have in rc, is there really a need for four magazines? Is there enough material for them all to flourish? Having 4 mags also makes for some tough choices from marketing departments, do they spend all their cash on just one mag, or spend a little on all four?

Of those 4 rc mags, one had really stepped up their game- RC Car Magazine, a Hi-Torque publication. Bess, Waldo, and Yu were going where most rc mags wouldn’t, using honesty. RC Car was saying exactly what they wanted to in product reviews, even if that resulted in losing an advertiser. That took big balls, not only from Bess and crew, but from their publisher. And not only had they stepped up their review game, but their editorials and original content were also top notch. Unfortunately Hi-Torque pulled the plug on’em, with RC Car’s last issue being Feb 2011. To Bess and crew- thanks for the great work you guys did at RC Car, and can’t wait to see where you guys land. Carpe diem!

On another note…

The best race series in our country was the RC Pro Series. Recently the RC Pro Series transferred hands from Carlton Eppes to one of his colleagues. Eppes was widely known as being the best race director on planet Earth. Additionally, Eppes was known for being responsive to manufactures needs and running a rock solid race program, but I knew him more for being stern, yet fair, with all his racers (regardless if they were noobs or factory pro’s). Had the RC Pro Series managed to land bigger sponsors and more media coverage, I have no doubt RC Pro would have become the dominant sanctioning body in America. Here’s to wishing all the best for Carlton in his future endeavors, your presence behind the wheel at the RC Pro Series will be greatly missed.

Associated shot out a PR on their way-super-dope-909-black-flat-billed hat last week. Yes, Associated dedicated an entire PR to a hat, so you just know it’s gonna be THAT good. Our editor Brian is gonna look great topped off with one of those while decked out in a black Metal Mulisha shirt and uber black DC skate shoes. :)

Remember a couple weeks ago when I mentioned Associated landed a deal to have Makita and Kicker sponsor their rc race team? Well, you wouldn’t really know it by looking at their team. I mean, the amount of signage that Makita and Kicker get on Associated shirts and race bodies is minimal at best. Does signage count if it takes a magnifying glass to see it? Anyways, did Makita only give AE one cordless drill? Did Kicker just shoot’em one pair of 4″ two ways? Or does AE need to devote more signage for their new team sponsors?

Have you seen JConcepts uber new Punisher body for the Associated T4? In 8th scale truggy perhaps they look loosely true to scale, but in 10th scale stadium truck, no way, no how- it looks like something a space alien would have designed just before OD’ing on shrooms and LSD. Can we please rename the stadium truck class to the “stadium martian” class? Thanks in advance! And I’m not bag’n on JConcepts here, I’m bag’n you, all those local racers who think it’s cool to have “stadium trucks” that looks like something my dog just hacked up on my living room carpet.

With that said, it’s time to wrap up another edition of THE Cub Report. Turn off the net, get off your ass, bust your rc out, hit your local track or bash spot, break loads of parts, then check out your local hobby shop.

We just confirmed that the RC Pro Series has been sold! I know a few people here at Big Squid RC were huge fans of Carlton Eppes and the way he ran the series, and he will be missed. We wish him luck in whatever his next project is.
As for the RC Pro Series, it’s now run David Lovett, and time will tell what his plans are for the series, we wish him luck as well!

Check out RC Pro Series website for info!

Yet another week in rc has gone by the wayside, so what were the scoops this week? Well, this was a trade show week, and most of the industry was sitting in sunny SoCal working the RCX show, yet still no “big” news emerged. The internet age has eliminated most of the “big” surprises from popping up at trade shows, and RCX was no different. A few new parts here and there, but nothing Earth shattering. I will say this about RCX, they definitely have the most 1:1 rides of any rc trade show, and Traxxas even had one of Jake Weimers Pro Circuit Kawa’s on display.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jesse Masterpool. Jesse was a 14 year old motocross prodigy that succumbed to injuries he suffered at the Lake Whitney National about a week ago. Jesse was not only an incredible talent, but also a great kid, RIP.

The 2010 RC Pro Series Nitro Off Road series races have been posted. If you are looking for a few big races to hit this summer, these are the best events to support, as Carlton Eppes runs the best show in the rc biz.

Breaking Bad is the best show on television right now. If you missed the season three premier tonight, you really need to climb out from under that rock you are hiding under and take a look. This blatant plug really has nothing to do with rc, but the show is way super dope, and you gotta have something to watch while wrenching on your new Jammin SCRT.

RC Pro Products alpha engines Looks like RC Pro Products and a Alpha RC USA have themselves a new driver! Jason Branham will be running Alpha Plus engines in his Xray buggy and truggy in 2010.

Hit the RC Pro Products page for more info.

Ryan Lutz

News from Alpha RC USA is that Ryan Lutz has signed with them to run Alpha Plus engines this year at all his events including the RC Pro Series and Worlds. Congrats to Ryan on the sponsorship.

RC Pro Products aplus pipe
Word from RC Pro Products is that they are importing the A Plus line of exhaust pipes starting with the 0801. Word on the street is that they are working great with the Alpha engine line. (also from RC Pro Products)

Check out RC Pro Products for more information.

RC Pro Products bits
New from RC Pro Products are these power driver bits. It’s a 4 bit set that comes with 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm sizes. Right now they are only metric but it’s a good start. Using a power driver is all the rage lately with the amount of work needing to be done on 1/8th scale vehicles, people’s forearms just can’t take all the abuse of doing it by hand. Especially with a full chassis upgrade!

Check out RC Pro Products for more information.

RC Pro Products Clutch RC Pro Products Clutch

It sounds like the RC Pro Products JVD RC Clutch System is off to a great start! Ryan Lutz used the system for the first time at the RC Pro Finals and finished 2nd in Pro Truck, and 3rd in Pro Buggy A Mains! Ryan’s clutch system was shipped to him at the event, these pictures were taken after about an hour of qualifying and the 1 hour a-main!

“I was extremely impressed with the amount of punch they had when they engaged. But it was totally manageable and they disengaged just as well to bring me back to my instant idle that I like.
I ran the same set-up on both buggy and truggy and while I never played around with springs at all, the stock package felt very good as it was with the 1.0’s all the way around.” says Ryan.

If they could take that abuse, I’m guessing they would hold up to some serious bashing!

Check out RC Pro Products for more information.

RC Pro Products Clutch Looks like RC Pro Products has a new clutch called the Viper Clutch. It’s a 3 shoe clutch set with 3 spring setup to fit Mugen/Xray pin size flywheels.

Check out RC Pro Products for their complete line.

tanner hagler The folks from RC Pro Products has just announced that Tanner Hagler is their newest team driver. Tanner runs in the South Pro Buggy and Arena Truck classes.

Personally I think they picked him up so he keeps bringing the girls with! ;)

For more info, make sure to check out the official RC Pro Products webpage.

RC Pro Products alpha engines RC Pro Products alpha engines

Since the announcement a few days ago about RC Pro Products becoming the official importer of Alpha RC Engines, the Alpha news has just been pouring in. Thought I’d give it a few mentions all in one posting.

First up, Dani Choi took a win recently at the Proline Gas Championships using the F850 5port. Then we heard that Manuel Mayer took TQ and fist place at the BB-Cup in Germany with an F850.
Starting to see the pattern?

Then, we couldn’t pass up these unboxing photo’s of the engines in stock over at RC Pro Products. We always love a good unboxing!

Long time no see, but welcome back to yet another edition of the industries most litigated opinion column, THE Cub Report.

So what’s the scoop on some of the newest product releases? Well, let’s just dive right in.

RPM is in the Big Squid RC Basher Approved hall of fame. They are one of the few companies that actually have their heads screwed on right, making good looking, good fitting, and no hassle product. Well, they recently shot out pics of their new Slash rear bumper/Mud Flap combos. Awesome, just awesome! I hope they sell a zillion of them. One step closer to realism, with the uber reliability of RPM. If you’ve been watching the 1:1 Torc series races on ESPN, you’d notice the only major cosmetic difference between your Slash and those racing on tv is the lack of mudflaps. The RPM bumper/mupflap combo is just what your Slash needs.

Seen the new Traxxas teaser video? Pretty much any type of “teaser” makes me want to have rabid multi-orfice fun with a porcupine excited now days. With that said, I give the new Traxxas teaser vid a B-. Slick production, but just slightly above average as far as general hype goes. I figured they would have waited to unveil their new beast at iHobby, as you could do one hell of a cool intro in front of the masses, but I hear they’ll be unveiling yet another platform at the show.

Big Props go out to Traxxas and RC Pro Series for their support of Rick “Too Hip” Johnsons Torc series. Awesome tracks, all the big name players, decent tv package, and Traxxas is plastered everywhere. Most media exposure ever for our industry. Even if you aren’t into short course racing, try to catch one of the 1:1 Torc races on the tube.

Horizon released info on a left hand thread kit for their 8 and 8T series of 8th scalers. What this boils down to is a few left hand screws for 5 bucks that should have been a running change on the new kits, but are being sold as a hop up. The HPI/Hot Bodies 8 series buggies and truggy come standard with these, cost far less, and won the worlds last year. Hummmm… wonder what the better value is.

Speaking of HPI/Hot Bodies- their Blitz’s are almost here! Get on the pre-order list at your LHS ASAP.

RC Pro Products released info on their uber new 8th scale wheel wrench. Nice to see a product designed by actual common sense racers, built to last, works correctly, that doesn’t empty the bank account. Quality tools are worth their weight in gold, thankfully, the RC Pro Products have all the quality but not the insane price tag.

Every JConcepts body I’ve ever seen looked uber trick. All their bodies for “race” type vehicles are really cool. Sadly, JConcepts has released pics of their new Slash body called the BAJR. Lets say you took the top off a VW body, the rear off a quad racer body, and the front off a Herbst truggy body, then molded them all into one- then you’d have the JConcepts BAJR. Wow. Like, you gotta be kidding me kinda fugly. If you want to turn your good looking Slash in a sort of Martian Turd looking machine, the BAJR is the body for you. Excuse me while I wash my eyes out with battery acid.

Well folks, you made it to the end of yet another Cub Report. Thanks for reading, and please get out and support your LHS’s and local tracks.

RC Pro Products alpha engines RC Pro Products has just announced that they are the official importer of Alpha RC Engines.
