Anyone who has been in the hobby for very long at all recognizes the value of a good soldering iron. It only takes one cold solder joint, one melted wire, or one burnt finger to see that having a good soldering station is just as important as a good battery, motor, or speed controller. When I first got started in RC, I fell victim to the “a soldering iron is a soldering iron” approach. They were cheap, crappy, electronic store irons that in hindsight were just awful. However, when that is all you’ve ever used, that is all you know.

A good station isn’t cheap compared to those $15 irons you get at R@dio Sh@ck. However, I didn’t exactly want to go out and spend $300 either. I decided to give the Team Checkpoint TC-950 (also called the Trakpower TK-950, more on that later) a try. Hit the jump to find out how it stacks up versus those cheap alternatives.

Team Checkpoint Power Supply New from Team Checkpoint is the 25A 12V Racing Power Supply. One of the key features for me would be the ability to power two charger at once! With all the 1/8th scale Electrics lately, it would be nice to get as many chargers going as possible!
Press Details:

• The 25A of current is powerful enough for racers charging large packs who need to get to the track quickly.
• Power two chargers at once or a charger plus tire warmer, discharger or other device on dual output terminals.
• DC output voltage can be adjusted from 11V to 15V as needed to operate all devices fully.
• Capable of maintaining 25A continuous output current at 12V DC.
• Two sets of 4mm banana jacks are included for making easy connections.
• Detachable terminal block adapter also accepts large alligator clips.
• To conserve pit space, the twin rear-mounted cooling fans allow other items to be stacked on top – yet keeps the power supply cool.
• Built-in current limiter automatically prevents damage from accidental overloads.
• Durable, lightweight case
• One-year limited warranty.

TCPP9000 12V 25A Racing Power Supply. Team Checkpoint

News from Team Checkpoint is that they were adding a few wins last week right here in Big Squid RC’s own backyard. We love to test over at Leisure Hours, the place rocks! Anyway, here’s the news from them:

Team Checkpoint This past weekend saw another Team Checkpoint Chitown Shootout put in the record books…and it didn’t disappoint. As always, the race was held at the world class Leisure Hours Raceway facility in Joliet, IL. When the racers walked in the door, they were treated to a supercross-like track that provided some awesome racing all weekend.

Team Checkpoint With over 160 entries, the racing was very competitive and included some of the fastest racers in the Midwest. During qualifying, Team Checkpoint drivers Steven Hartson, Sarah Ernst, Chris Arnold, Scott Cramer, Jimbo Kvidera and Max Cramer were super fast and sitting comfortably in the A mains.

Team Checkpoint Lipo Ok, check these out! New from Team Checkpoint are these 7.4v 4800mAh Saddle Pack LiPo Battries! The press release mentions that they fix sedans and buddies, but I’m thinking these things would be sweet for RC Rock Crawling! You could balance your weight more precisely, just the way you want. Cool!
The full press release will be in the NEW Product Forum

Team Checkpoint LiPo These new Team CheckPoint 7.4v 4900mah LiPo battery packs are ROAR legal, and should be available about now. They come wired and ready to go! Check the NEW Product Forum for the full release.

Information on two new items from Team Check Point has just come in. The Pro Car LiPo Balancer, balances individual cell voltages during charge/discharge and automatically checks for poor quality cells. It can be used alone or with a separate charger such as the TC-1030. It’s designed to work with 2 to 3 cell packs assembled in series and wired for balancing. I’m not 100% sure how you know your pack is wired for balancing, I’ll have to look into that.

News also came in today about the 7.4v 5400 mAh LiPo Battery. Besides the long run time, it also comes in an impact-resistant case to protect against damage. With that ROAR rumor we posted earlier, my guess would be that these are ready for action.
