Any time we hear the words Tiger and Raptor together, we immediatly think of a Griffin, that mythological beast of eagle and lion lineage.  We could totally see a Tigerraptor and Griffin going at it in the skies above ancient Greece.  It would be the most epic creature battle since Godzilla took on Charles Barkley.  Alas, the press release we received today shares no such news as totally awesome as that.  But what it does share is Thunder Tiger‘s latest helicopter release, a new version of the Raptor 30 V2 Pro now in a receiver ready configuration.  What that means is it’s a fully assembled ARF with all the servos and a gyro included, ready for you to put a receiver into it and start flying.  This heli also has many performance upgrades in the Pro trim, including larger radial and thrust bearings for better blade pitch control, stronger side frames for better crash resistance and a re-designed swashplate for more durability and less play.

This new configuration is available now with a MSRP of $900.  Check out the Thunder Tiger USA website for all the specs.

Thunder Tiger has decided to jump on the 1/8 nitro Short Course bandwagon with the RTA4. If you own a MTA4 ( Associated MGT) you’ll probably be seeing double, as minus the A-arms, driveshafts, wheels/tires and bodywork, the RTA4 is identical underneath. It is powered by Thunder Tiger’s ever reliable and powerful .28 pullstart engine with a large 150cc fuel tank, and has a two-speed transmission to put that power down efficiently. Onboard you will find the usual Thunder Tiger bling, inlcuding many aluminum parts and a 3 channel 2.4ghz radio. Oh, and if you’re not a fan of nitro, RC-Monster make an electric conversion kit!

Keep an eye on the Thunder Tiger website for more information.

Thunder Tiger has a new Phoenix STII Stadium Truck for anyone out there look for a 2WD ST. Completely assembled with a 17T Super Sports motor, Ace Veloci-R ESC, Ace Cougar PS3 3-channel 2.4GHz radio system, and a 2.40:1 transmission ratio for seamless power transfer. What to hear the crazy part? It’s only $160! It should be available now in one of six colors.

Make sure you hit up Thunder Tiger for more info.

Both Bill and I were pretty sold on the Aquacraft Minimono when we showed it at the end of July, but now Thunder Tiger has something a little bit bigger with their new Outlaw Jr. Brushless RTR Boat. Measuring only 29 inches long, it will fit perfectly in smaller bodies of water. Featuring a water-cooled motor, ESC and 2.4GHz radio; it even comes a wooden stand! Available in yellow or green for just $220, these boats should be shipping early September.

I think the green looks killer! Whatcha say Wrench? Outlaw, Mono, or both? Make sure you hit Thunder Tiger for more info.

If you haven’t read the Thunder Tiger DT12 Review yet you should really check it out.

We just updated the review with a short video we did during our durability testing. In this one we jump the Sparrowhawk DT12 off the drivers stand roof at the Rivercity track in Peoria IL. After a tumble and roll landing, we drive it away! If your interested in a 4×4 1/12th scale off road, this may be the one your looking for.

Not too many vehicles you can do this too and drive away!

Coming fresh off our Sparrowhawk XXT Review it was time to check out the Sparrowhawk DT12. We were interested to see if the 1/12th scale 4×4 DT had any similarities to the XXT, if was as tough, as good in the air, and could it bash with the best of them? Well keep on reading to find out… READ MORE

Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk XXT Review

Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk

After witnessing first hand Thunder Tigers impressive and aggressive work on the MT4-G3 Monster Truck, we just had to get our hands on some of their other vehicles and put them to the test. Would the Sparrowhawk XXT live up to it’s big brothers reputation? Would it be tougher than nails and have us all fighting for the controller? Keep reading to find out.. READ MORE

Thunder Tiger Huge Jump So it looks like it’s time for another update on what’s been going down around the office lately. First up, is some big news. We have decided to go ahead and give the Thunder Tiger MT4-3G our BASHER APPROVED award! I honestly don’t think we have tested a tougher truck. On all of our latest outings, everyone has just been all about torturing this truck. At the HuckFest a few weeks ago we jumped this truck over 125 feet about 5 times in a row. We were running most the day on 6S at close to 60mph, and we drove it away. It’s the only vehicle that was able to make more than two jumps in a row and survive! Any other truck this size would of shredded gears, broken a-arms or worse, but the Thunder Tiger MT4 went home in one piece. It’s been bashed at skate parks, streets, yards and tracks, and has been our goto truck for the past few weeks, so everyone here agreed we needed to give it the award! Congrats to Thunder Tiger on the awesome truck.. keep up the good work!

Other things around the office, we are testing the Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk XXT. Will it be able to follow in the footsteps? Only time will tell.
We are also gearing up for another shootout. This one is going to be a little different, and already we have a lot of companies supporting it, so it’s looking like there will be some great match-ups! More about the shootout in a couple of weeks.
Besides all that, we have been getting ready for the RCX event coming up on August 6th as well as iHobby in October! We are going big at both shows, so if you are in the area, make sure to come on out!

I think that’s enough watercooler news for this week. Thanks for reading!

Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk

We recently got our hands on the Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk XXT 4wd RTR ST electric truck. It comes with a 2.4ghz radio and brushless motor system. First impressions out of the box are ‘this looks like a good time!’.

Watch for an upcoming review after we beat it up a little. For now, enjoy the pics, and there are plenty more after the break…

Thunder Tiger SB5 Motorcycle

Jeff was just talking about how much Thunder Tiger news we have been posting, and here we are again. This time it’s about the new 1/5 Scale SB-5 EP Motorcycle. It comes RTR in brushed or brushless form with a 2.4GHz radio. The brushed version will feature the 17T 540 motor and Velosci-RS ESC or you can go brushless with IBL 36/39-540C motor and BLC-40C speed control.

The Brushed version of the SB-5 will run about $399 retail, with the brushless going for $449. Expect these prices to be a little lower when they hit the market in July of 2011. Check out the Thunder Tiger website for more info.

You know, I think we’ve posted more news from Thunder Tiger in the past month than any other time in this site’s history.  That’s a pretty good sign that TT is getting on the ball and coming up with some great new releases.  Their newest one is a nitro powered, 1/10 scale sedan that goes by the name of Tomahawk VX.  Some of the big features of the Tomahawk include shaft-driven 4wd, a .18 size Pro-18BX engine mated to a 2-speed transmission, anodized 3mm chassis, and full ball-bearings.  To keep the Tomahawk from flying off the handle, Thunder Tiger is including an Ace RC Cougar PS3, 2.4 GHz radio system and it’s topped off with an officially licensed Nissan GT-R body.

The Tomahawk VX will be available toward the end of this month with an MSRP of $479.99.  Check out the Thunder Tiger website for more info.

So you’ve been bashing and thrashing monster trucks, short course, or 1/8 buggies and truggies, but you’ve grown tired of them and are looking for something different.  Thunder Tiger may have what you’re looking for in their new 1/8 scale Go Kart, the KT8.  It’s packed with a brushless system for high speeds, but is it durable enough to live up to a basher lifestyle?  Click through the break to find out.

Cubby Formula 1 was in Spain over the weekend and the competition still couldn’t stop of the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari pilot Fernando Alonso pulled the holeshot off the grid and was looking good early in the race, but the superior pace of the Red Bull could not be denied. The next F1 race is this weekend in Monaco, lets hope !

The Lucas Oil AMA Motocross series kicked off last weekend with Monster/PC/Kawi/Traxxas rider Blake Baggett taking the win in the Lites class, while Speedy Reedy piloted his Two-Two/Shift/Bel-Ray/Honda to the win in the uber class. Ryan Villopoto is the heavy favorite to win the championship in the 450 class but he was a tick off the pace last weekend due to illness. Last years champ Ryan Dungey won the first moto but couldn’t beat CR22 in the second moto to land the overall on the day. Next Saturday the National tour lands in Wortham Texas, be there or be square.

All the motocross factory teams still rave about their one day pro format they switched to a few years ago. The factory rigs roll in on Friday. The factory riders fly in typically on Friday (but sometimes Saturday morning). The factory shoes then race Saturday and fly out either Saturday night or Sunday morning. This is suchhh a far cry from us in the rc world where it’s not uncommon for the factory guys to be at the track for nearly a full week- practicing, qualifying, then finally racing. Unlike most pro full scale racers, our rc factory shoes don’t have the luxury of time for sleep or sightseeing, they are busy working all day at the track then wrenching all night back at the hotel room. It’s not rare that a factory rc guy logs 100 hours during a big race week.

But… is there really a need for all the hours? When a racer (factory or privateer) is at a big event, is there really a need for 2+ days of practice, 2+ more days of qualifying and 1-2 days of mains? Do all those days at the track result in better racing? Do they result in more accurately determining the fastest driver on that day at that track? Do they result in more “fun” for anyone involved? IMO hell no, those long rc race weeks are only good for one thing- skyrocketing the cost of racing. Ask anyone in the industry if the price of racing is too high and they all say “yes”, yet they all seem fine with races that take a week to put on.

Wanna cut the cost of racing? Knock the big events down to two days. Yes, I said TWO days. And by two days I mean- don’t even show up a day early because nobody is allowed at the track except the track workers. Practice and qualify on Saturday, race on Sunday, then hit the road for home, seriously it can be done. Those that don’t believe a big rc race can be held in just two days have been brainwashed by the mighty rc machine (or are woefully resistant to change). Racers outside the rc would would scoff (actually they would laugh their asses off) at being at the track for a full week, yet rc’ers think it’s a necessity. I’d argue that taking a week to hold an rc race is nothing more than a bunch of wasted time and resources.

It seems rc racers and track owners think that big races “have” to be a week long just to “prove” how serious rc racing is. To this I say that a motocross national is infinitely more serious, yet they only a one day event. How “serious” a race is taken certainly isn’t determined by how many days you drag it out, an rc race can be deadly serious and just be 2 days in length. Just say’n…

On a different note…

I hear Jeff has a way-super-dope Thunder Tiger review ready for Tuesday. I won’t let the genie out of the bottle and say what vehicle he reviewed, but I will say that Jeff has mentioned it’s nearly unbreakable. Who would have thought that Thunder Tiger is building a new rep for mega durable vehicles? Who would have thought Thunder Tiger is putting their name back on the map again? Well it certainly looks that way…

Look for news on BigSquids next bash to be posted this week. Sounds like it’ll be held at a park in the Chi-Town metro and is simply about bashing and having a great time.

That’s it for this week gang, support your local hobby shops, tracks and bash spots!
