Normally, i race 18th scale on and off road.... sometimes i run high speed.... and very rarely i drag race.... so i was looking for a set-up that would be fairly quick, but not too crazy because i didn't want to crash.... i had a ton of guys asking what i was running, so this is exactly what i ran last weekend...

Car- Grand Motorsports GMS Dragster ($209).... i've run miles and miles and miles upon miles on this car doing high speed and power system testing.... i've hit curbs at triple digits.... and i'm still on my original chassis!!... this is one tough car (and i need one that way!).... it also seems to track ultra straight, which is a big plus for me because i'm not used to making big corrections at these types of speeds.... http://www.grandmotorsports.com/dragster.asp

Motor- Castle Creations CM-2080 ($79)...... this is CC's small motor, normally used in Losi Mini-T's and HPI Micro RS-4's.... i went with this motor because i wanted enough power to be quick, but not so much that i was crashing every pass... turned out to be a very drivable, yet quick powerplant... http://www.castlecreations.com/products/cm-2080.html

Motor Mount- because the CM-2080 motor is so small, i had to use a custom motor mount..... Mike at Grand Motorsports might be able to help you get one, if not, i got mine from JC Motorsports, email me if you need contact info.....

Speed Controller- Castle Creations Mamba Max ($135)..... this is CC's 10th scale speedo, and is more than capable of handling any current demand that the CM-2080 might ask for.... it's also super adjustable, so if i want to tame it down a bit, it's easy to do, or if i want more power, i can do that as well.... i started the day super soft on power settings, and gradually upped the power all day... http://www.castlecreations.com/products/mamba_max.html

Servo- Hitec HS-55 ($14)..... i use this servo because it is ultra small, ultra light weight, but has more than enough speed and power to get the job done..... http://www.hitecrcd.com/servos/show?name=HS-55

Servo Saver- Losi LOSB1226 ($3).... i use to protect the gears in the Hitec servo... my servo is alive and well today because of this saver (after dozens of crashes!!)... http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/De ... D=LOSB1226

Batteries- two packs of 2S 7.4v MaxAmps 2100HV ($39 each)..... these are MaxAmps latest packs that feature large copper tabs for max current flow in high drain applications (like drag racing).... i've done some pretty insane things with these packs- they are some tough customers, and put out great voltage under load... i use two of these packs wired in series for 4S (Maximum unloaded voltage of 16.8v- typical voltage under 10C load, 21 amps, of around 14v).... http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-2100-74-Pack.htm

Charger- Duratrax ICE ($130).... when used with the optional temp sensor, this is the safest way to charge lithium polymer type packs... plus, it can charge your ni-mh and ni-cad packs as well... http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... XHDJ1&P=ML

Traction Compound- Grand Motorsports Heavy #734 ($5).... this stuff gets the rear tires super sticky so you don't have to worry about spinning out... this traction compound combined with Lynwood's great track prep meant no traction related issues at all for me last weekend.... http://www.grandmotorsports.com/sale-parts.asp

Connectors- Dean's Ultra Plugs ($3.50 pair).... i use these to make a splitter to wire my batteries for 4S then connect it to the speed controller via Dean's as well... these connectors are more than enough for use in my application... http://www.wsdeans.com/products/plugs/ultra_plug.html

Servo Extension- Hobbico HCAM2000 ($4.29)..... i mounted my Mamba speed controller in the rear of my car, but i mounted my receiver in the front.... the wire from my speedo was too short, so i used this 6" extension.... http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... XL287&P=ML

this puts my car at around $670 minus transmitter and receiver which most people already have...

i definitely wasn't the fastest guy at Lynwood last weekend.... but i was fairly quick yet fully in control of my car.... my fastest run was a 1.85 and my highest top speed was 85 mph.... although i know Mike Ogle has run a very similar set-up down into the 1.7's and perhaps the 1.6's....

that's the scoop fella's.... i hope the weather stays good so i can get back to Lynwood ASAP so i can hang with you guys and work on my set-up some more..... otherwise.... if you can make it down to the Ihobby show ( http://www.ihobbyexpo.com/ ) please drop by the Castle or Maxamps booth and say hello!!!

Tim

***Edit- Here's a couple things i forgot from my original post.....

Pinion- Associated 21154 ($4).... i was geared at 13/87...... this pinion bolts right up to the CM-2080 motor.... http://www.teamassociated.com/misc/data ... ngears.htm

Wing- Duratrax DTXC9775 ($7.99)...... this is the wing off the Duratrax Vendetta 18th scale buggy...... it's made out of tough plastic to take some abuse... and you can get it in white, yellow, green, blue, or "carbon fiber look"...... http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... LXLLZ2&P=7

Thanks for the great write-up Tim! I know you were fielding a ton of questions over the weekend.
