How did this happen?

Well I will tell you how….. A week ago on a very nice Saturday afternoon I wandered out into the garage and began going through boxes to see what I could throw out or organize. Well two boxes in (yes I didn't get too far) I open a box that is filled with all my old RC stuff.

I stared into the box and drifted off into a world I had forgotten about.

Let me explain, you see many years ago (about 19 years to be exact) I went into a Hobby store and saw these way cool remote controlled electric off-road buggies. Well I had to have one so after spending I am sure too much money I had my very own… I played with it all over my backyard, jumping off of rocks and bumps and anything I could find… even chasing a cat or two!

It was a blast! But one day I broke me pretty little buggy and had to find a new hobby store to buy parts to fix it. I found a place not far from my house and after looking around the store I noticed that behind the counter was a large glass window and behind it was what looked like a tiny little version of a NASCAR oval track! (One-Stop Raceway)

WTF is that I asked??

The guy behind the counter (his name I later found out was "Mustang"... I can't make this stuff up) told me they race on the track on Friday nights…

Well that was all I needed to know and if you know Tim you know if I get to compete, I want to do it!

Fast-forward about 2 years and I am so entrenched in the RC world I can see nothing else. My best friend at the time works for a RC magazine writing articles and doing reviews of new products. I spend every extra moment I have working on cars talking to manufactures and traveling around going to races…

By this time I have sponsorship with a few manufactures and other then my food I get to travel and race for pretty much free!

Everything was good!

Let me note that there are maybe 5 people at the time in the world of RC that didn't have to work… I was Not one of them.

Well one evening I was sitting at home watching TV when my buddy Mike Ogle called me and said "Hey do you know where the city of Colton is?" yeah I think I can find it why? He tells me that I need to come out there because he is looking at the "Coolest Thing in RC he has ever seen!"

Ok that is all I needed to hear and about 45 minutes later I am smack dab in the middle of Colton California. I see Mike and I see what looks like…. No it can't be…… Yup… it's a 1/10 scale drag-strip!

I stand there dizzy and mesmerized by what is in front of me.
The sign reads.. "Welcome To Drag World...home of the worlds fastest RC cars"

It was the Coolest thing in RC I had ever seen, he was right.

There was a bleacher filled with what looked to be 50 -60 people (that's a lot for any RC race) and standing at the starting line is Mike. I walk over to him and he says.. "Wait Watch This!" Just then I see a guy (Roger Rose… of the Christian Rock band "Mad At The World") walk up holding a unbelievably cool 1/10 scale dragster.

Roger sets down this dragster on the starting line, stages the car and the next thing I see is the "Christmas Tree" light up and like a bullet this car is gone. The car went from a dead stop 132 feet in 1.95 seconds at just over 75 MPH…. On Battery's!

Holy Crap! That was the greatest thing I have ever seen in the World of remote controlled.

Well Mike and I look at each other and it's clear…. We will be racing here very soon…. So the next week I am there with Mike and we are racing…

Fast-forward about 3 years Mike and I are racing every week and traveling all over the country to race our Dragsters. We both hold many records both track and world records I signed an autograph here and there and life is good.

Well because life can make you do things you may not want to I ended my RC racing career about 12 years ago and other then trying remote controlled Helicopter for awhile I completely stop racing all together.

Now I stand here in my garage completely drunk off the joy of looking at two boxes filled with so many great memories of fun times with good friends from all around the country. I began looking through everything and other then lots of dust, everything on my Drag cars looks to be just as they were the day they came off the track.

God Bless the Internet!

Thanks to Google it only takes me a few minutes to find that a bunch of people still race RC dragsters and with a few more clicks I see that my long lost Buddy Mike Ogle now owns a RC drag shop (Grand MotorSports.. free plug Mike ;) )and has moved from sunny California to Illinois! Click, click, click What's this I see… a group of guys opened a track about 40 miles from my house not more then 6 months ago!!! Click, click, click I find the forums for this new track near my house… I began to read the threads and one by one I see name after name I remember from the old days, like a high school reunion the names and memories flood into my brain I am totally overjoyed!

I join the forums and post to see if anyone remembers me and to find out when the next race is so I can come out and watch.

The next day my phone begins to ring one by one they call in disbelieve that "Tim Smith" is still alive and wants to race again.

After a few days I have my cars ready to go, new motors on the way and Saturday is the day of truth, the day I will see how a 15 year layoff has affected me and what 15 years has done to RC drag racing.

Wish me luck. I will report back after Saturday with all the grisly details good or bad.

I can vouch for every detail of Tim's story. We had a RIOT back in the late 80's to early 90's.

I've got some pics of Tim's cars, including this one:

And, of course, these two Pink Premier Evolution dragsters...

mine on the left, Tim's car to the right... and that's a pic of the both of us facing off in the final on the upper right.

Tim is very, very good at this... I bet he runs record numbers first weekend back after more than a decade off....

Well here I sit; the weekend I had waited 15 years for has come and gone and like the times 15 years ago I am left with lots of great memories.

So how did it go Tim?

Well it went as I hoped and expected. I was talking to my wife before Saturday and she asked me. “How do you think you will do?” Well I said “I think I will do very well maybe ever touch the current record.” She asked “How do you think you will do that being as you have not raced in so many years?” “Well, I said… the last time my cars were on a track they were working perfectly and in this sport having a car that really works and doesn’t fight you all the way down the track is a huge part of it all, and with all the talk that the new brushless motors and lipo batteries have more power then you can effectively put to the ground (wow was this a true statement!) I am guessing everyone is fighting the same thing and I have tons of confidence in my cars and my ability to make them work on most any surface. (Being modest is not one of Tim’s strong points)

So with that said here we go.

I arrived at the track at about 9:00 am. As I drove up I see the red and white boards marking the lanes and the Christmas tree standing majestically alone at the starting line. I stopped my truck and sat there staring at the track. I couldn’t believe I had been gone so long. Like a dear friend there it was waiting for me.

Park the truck and jump out. The first person I see is Jim Schauer and from the grin on his face he saw me too. I spend the next couple of hours talking to everyone about where I have been and how life (and kids) have changed us all (for the better I might add) we laugh and make fun of how much gray hair we have now and how much fatter we all are.

Now that all the goofing is out of the way for now it’s time to race. Let me just tell you that the second I set up my table and laid out all my tools and whatnot it was like I had never gone away.
I spent the next 20 minutes rubbing “Rainman’s” thigh and blowing tiny kisses into his ear….

Ok so now I have a motor and batteries to use (mine are still on order but thanks to Jim it didn’t matter he made sure Nic and I were covered) I think I am ready to see what this car will do.

I load it up, prep the tires grab my radio and make that walk to the starting line. About now I start to feel a bit nervous, I hear the people as I pass them begin to whisper and I know all to well it is about me. I get to the line and everything starts to become a blur, my heart is pounding (will the car work, will I smash it into a wall…will I ramp it and be forced to watch my car attempt to fly?) I survey the starting line as my mind files through the years of notes in order to pick the right spot to launch from. I roll the car into the lights, Prestage….Stage…. I step back; Mike Smith asks me if I am ready? And uncontrolled by me my head nods yes.
The lights flash on and all at once I grab a hand full of throttle. The car leaps forward about 6 feet and then stops…..

Well that was uneventful…

After a quick look it would seem that I cooked a small part of the speed control….so out with that one and a few more tiny kisses Jimmy’s way and I have a new ESC again.

Back to the line stage it up step back and wait for the lights. This time she violently leaps off the line and at about 60 feet begins moving towards the left board, I start to bring her back but she snaps over sideways and tries to dirt track on me so off the throttle, save the car is the best thing at this point.

Back to the pits, check everything over, clean the tires and add two clicks to the right.

Ok did I mention that is was hot? Like about an inch from the sun hot….
Time: 1:45 pm Temp: 104° Track Temp: 142° like I said HOT

I dig through my box and find a very nice clean white hand towel, I soak it in my ice chest and then place it on my head… AWWWWWWWW That is much better!

Ok Tires are prepped… I don’t need to peak these batteries so it’s back up to the line. Maybe this time we can get her all the way down the track.

Turn on the car and listen to the little song she wants to sing. Pre-stage… Stage…The tree lights up and I am off!
The car leaves the line and never wavers more then about 6 inches to the left. WHOOOOSHSHHHHH… through the traps and to a safe stop. I begin to walk down to the shut down area to get me car when I hear over the load speaker.

OMG! Jimmy your not going to believe this!

The announcement comes, Left lane 1.4031 at 89.60 MPH!

I had done it, I had just made my first complete pass on my 15 year old car and it was (at the time) the quickest pass ever (by only 0.0006) in drag racing.

My mind went blank… I was swallowed up in pats on back, hand shakes and high fives!

I had done it, I had come back to the sport I loved and showed myself more then anyone that I could still compete with the top guys.

I managed one more complete pass (1.41) before blowing over at 75 foot and breaking my steering servo effectively ending my day.

So there it is, after a long time away I came back and was overwhelmed with success and joy. I was back to doing what I loved and she was kind to me and gave me a gift that she knew would make me come back for more.

A huge Thanks to Jim “Rainman” Schauer, without your motor leasing program I could have never had the day I had.
Mike Ogle my long time friend, we have been through so much over the years, your words of wisdom have helped my on and off the track more then you will ever know.

And to everyone else that have helped me in so many countless ways I thank you.

What a story! Talk about a heart tugger! At first I was laughing at all the parts where Tim likes to talk to himself (think we should call a doctor for him?) Then I was sad because he had two rough starts off the line. (I cant believe you were so brave to even pull the trigger like that your first times back.. my first 5 runs I probably averaged 50mph tops!)

THEN to walk away with a 1.4! WOW! just wow!

Congrats! Great job, and another great story!

Brian
