Hey guys... I have been using an ICE charger all this season. I havn't changed any setting all year, and all of a sudden my batteries are getting cooked!!!

I charge at 6 amps with a .3 cut off (lowest setting) and when re-peaking before a pass they would get to about 100-105* I would hit them again to get the temp up to 125-130* before I run.

Well 2 weeks ago, one the first peak, I thought to myself that it was taking an awful long time to charge. I took my temp gun to the pack, and one cell said 172*!!!!!! They were all 165* plus. I am surprised it didn't blow up!

Any ideas?????

The repeated charging at such a high rate could have taken it's toll on the batteries. You are better off charging at a lower rate (Somewhere in the 1-3 amp range). If you want an extra boost before a race, then it would be ok to hit it with a high charge rate for a quick peak.

I've never heard of anybody charging 4200s at 1-3 amps. Even the matchers match at 6 amp charge. Plus, this was a brand new set of 4200s from pro match, that I just used that day for the first time. I had cyceld them at home, but that's it. I tried my JBR cells and they got up to 150 before I shut them off?? It's weird!

I've always heard that continually charging at a High amperage wears out the batteries. The extra heat involved is enough to cut down the battery life. Maybe things have changed with the much higher Mah today's batteries can handle.

With the ICE charger, (it is one of the best) I have found that a good rule of thumb is you do NOT charge in amps over the pack mah/1000.

So if you have a 4200 pack, then you should be charging at no more then 4.2 amps. I have heard this from several people, and this is the method I have been using for years now since the charger came out.

Hope that helps.

I run off road and have continually charged my packs at 6amps and sometimes 7 for a quick boost for about 4 years now. Never had a problem. Sure the packs are hot, but the extra power makes all the difference. Lots of guys at my local track, Leisure Hours, do the same thing.
Charging the packs at 1-3 amps, sure if you have all day for a pack to charge. 172 degrees does seem high though. Call Duratrax support and see what they say.

that is correct.... the higher the charge rate, the less cycles you will get out of your cells... this applies to any type of cells- ni-cad, ni-mh, li-ion, and li-polymer...

for any of the newer people out there- there are typically three reasons your cells get extremely hot during charging for ni-mh-

1. too high of a cut off voltage.... the higher the cut off voltage, the further past peak the packs are charged.... if you lower the cut off voltage like Paul did, this will reduce the amount of charge time past peak, and help reduce temps....

2. too high of a charge rate..... when the engineers design the cells initially, they are nearly always designed for a 1C charge... this applies to all types of cells... if you are running IB4200's, chances are nearly 100% that the sizes of the cathodes, anodes and chemical mixtures were calculated for 1C charge rates during the design stage... if you charge at a higher rate than this, the electrons are not very efficiently transferred, resulting in more heat, and more "wear" on the cell..... of course, a higher rate will typically yield in higher voltage under load during discharge, but at the cost of cell life...

3. cell damage.... if the internals get damaged in a pack, charge temps can skyrocket.... high spike, or continuous discharge load is probably the number one reason for major cell damage.... with overcharge perhaps being the second most common...

chances are very likely that if your packs are peaking at 140+ degrees that the pack is ruined.. and while it might actually work, it's very likely it's voltage under load during discharge is very poor (more so at higher discharge loads, 20-30C, less so at 1-5C)....
