Lipo Shootout 3 – Top Speed

BigSquidRC 4S Lipo Battery Shootout- Top Speed

In our last shootout, we used a truck set up strictly for high speed, one that was geared to the moon running a high kv brushless motor. Doing it that way pushed each battery to its limits, and helped separate the men from the boys. This time, we decided to take a different approach, to use a power set-up that you’d actually use on a track. Using only moderate gearing and a mild kv motor would not push the packs very hard, making the gap between a great pack and weak pack very small.

Our test Hot Bodies Ve8 was once again used for this test. The Ve8 was powered by a Castle 2200 kv motor, using a 20 tooth HB pinion and the stock spur gear. A Castle Monster speedo was used, with the timing set to “normal”. The Bushnell radar gun that we’ve used in previous tests was recruited once again, and the test driver made as many passes as needed to get the optimal speed for each pack. Once again, this was a “blind” test, the test driver did not know which battery was in the car during the speed runs.

And the winner was? The Thunder Power 65C broke away from the pack, and posted a top speed of 45 miles per hour, making it the winner in this hard fought category. All the rest of the packs resulted in a top speed of 44 mph.

Remember: The tests are all scored by points, lowest to highest. The lower the score the better, like a game of golf.
