RC4WD slash wheelsRC4WD slash wheels
The good people over at RC4WD are showing some love for the Traxxas Slash 4×4 and 2WD Slash! First up on the left are the first functional custom billet beadlock wheels for the Slash 4×4 called the Outlaw 2.2/3.0 Racing Wheels. They weigh 5.8 ounces each, have the same offset as the stock wheels and are designed only to fit the Slash 4×4. They only work with Traxxas Slash stock tires, so keep that in mind if you are looking to buy a set.
They have also released the Shock Lightweight Beadlock Wheels for the Slash 2WD. They are very scale looking, lightweight plastic beadlocks, and can be used with Proline and RC4WD 2.2/3.0 tires.

LRP Quadra 2 ChargerLRP has got something for everyone today it seems. If you’re in the market for a new battery charger they’ve got the new Quadra Pro 2. Wit it you can charge NiMHs/NiCads (1-14 cells), LiPos, or LiFes (both types 1 – 5 cells) at anywhere from 0.1 up to 5.0 amps. It’s also got an integrated balancer for LiPos and cycle and discharge modes. The Quadra takes AC or DC input so it’ll work at home or in the field. MSRP: $259.99, available: now or very soon.

LRP Quadra 2 ChargerAnother product from LRP is the 2in1 LiPo Guard + BEC. It’s a low voltage cutoff AND a 6V/5A switched BEC to keep the juice flowing to your receiver and servos. So for all of you high-power users this may be a way for you to cut some clutter out of your ride by consolidating two pieces into one. The MSRP is $69.99 and it should be on shelves this month.

That’s not all, if you have a LRP X-12 brushless motor then LRP has a few new Sintered Rotors for you. Available in 12.0mm, 12.5mm, and 13.0mm, you now have three more options to tune your motor to the racing conditions. MSRPs are $44.99 each.

Wait there’s more. A stopwatch. Get all the info you need about all these new products by clicking through to the LRP homepage on Associated’s web site.

LiPo Battery Reviews That’s right folks! It’s finally here! The post you have all been waiting and asking for! The Second Lipo Battery Shootout!
This time around we had a whole new set of competitors. We would like to thank all the companies for their participation in the shootout.
Here they are, and the packs we used:
Team Checkpoint 5000mah 40c
ACE Acepow Electronics 5000mah 40c
Common Sense RC 5000mah 40c
JGB RC 5200mah 35c
Venom Group RC 5000mah 20c
Empire RC – Hyperion 5000mah 30c
Hobbyking – Zippy Pack 5000mah 30c
Winforce RC (Off Ebay) 5000mah 30c

Now head over to the first page of the shootout, since we know you are dying to find out who won!

For those that missed the first one a while back you can read it RIGHT HERE!.

This is an exciting week for BigSquid. We’ve worked long and hard on our Li-po Shootout 2, and the results are ready to be posted. Testing batteries might not be “hard” work compared to a construction worker, but it is certainly time consuming. Take the capacity test for example- it takes slightly over 1 hour to fully charge up a battery at a 1C charge rate, then roughly another hour to get the actual capacity during a 1C discharge, then yet another hour to recharge the pack for the next test. Multiply that three hour process by 8 battery packs and I think you start to get the idea. You could also take into consideration our track driving test, where 3 different drivers hit the track with each pack to see which feels fastest. Three drivers getting wheel time with 8 different packs, all that have to be charged, then driven, then recharged, and you can do the math, it just equals a lot of time, a lot of time that traditional magazines just won’t spend.

Considering that BigSquid is often referred to as “The Anti-Magazine”, we really do work our asses off to provide the most accurate and non-biased test results possible. It certainly would be advantageous for us to gain more advertisers if all we posted was kiss a$$ reviews, but if we did that we’d be no different than the mags (with a few exceptions now days) and we’d have no respect for ourselves or from our readers. Part of what we do to get non-biased results is using “blind” test methods whenever possible. This is something you just don’t see anywhere else, even though it’s a much more accurate way to test than other methods. When our test drivers were busting out laps getting a feel for each battery, they had no idea what brand battery was in the truck at that time. Even if our test drivers had preexisting biased towards a certain brand name, they simply did not have the opportunity to exercise it. In fact, every conceivable way that we could make testing more fair or equal, we did, no matter if it took a lot of extra time or effort.

To boil it down, we hope you enjoy our Li-po Shootout 2, we’ve worked our asses off for you our readers on that one.

Oh and, all you consumers owe me. Yes, yes you do. Before I started talking about “shootouts” in THE Cub Report the last couple of years, you NEVER saw a one in an rc mag. Shootouts by the mags aren’t likely to be unbiased due to all their advertisers, but even a sh^##y shootout is better than kiss ass single reviews. There have actually been two others beefs of mine that have changed the way things are done in rc lately, so it’s nice to see the mags are reading THE Cub Report on a weekly basis and taking notes.

One last thing for this week. Bet you didn’t know that BigSquid’s catchy “Basher Approved” slogan is actually trademarked by BigSquid. Yes, seriously, that’s no joke. You might see the slogan in others places, but trust me, you won’t be seeing it for very long unless it’s the BigSquid seal of “Basher Approved” LOL. If you are a manufacture and think you’ve got some kick ass product that is tough as nails, trust me, it’s cheaper to submit it to BigSquid for testing than the settlement that our scum sucking lawyer is going to shoot your way. Just say’n….

That’s it for this week. Support your local hobby shops, tracks and bash spots!

Frankie also say if he wanted to win he shouldn't have crashed, he has noone to be angry at but himself. Frankie later went on to say War! Hide Yourself!

Article: Review of the Duratrax Vendetta SC at RC Universe and our Team Associated SC18 review. Compare and contrast. In my opinion I would give the SC18 the nod just based on price alone. The ‘Detta SC is $40 more and doesn’t come with a battery or charger. On the other hand it is more adjustable and probably more well suited for real competitive racing.

Build Log: Track build – A guy seeks guidance and offers up some pics of his work. Others share their homebuilt tracks as well.

Photo of the Week: Trucks hittin the trail.

Another Photo: French racing action.

Video of the Week: Traxxas Stampede hydroplane – Using paddle tires and insane power to make a car drive on water. From our forum, get involved.

More Video: R/C Car Action magazine is celebrating 25 years. Congratulations to ya! There’s no doubt you’ve had a huge influence on the hobby and industry. And your first Monster & Racing Trucks special issue was my first exposure to hobby grade r/c about 20 years ago. The homebuilt Primadonna Clod from the August ’91 issue is still a project and article that sticks out in my mind. Here’s to another 25 RCCA, but watch out cause we’re gunnin for ya! :-p

For a trip down memory lane, go check out RCCA’s issue archive and see how many of the covers you remember.

Robitronic Speedstar Brushless 1/8 scale SpeedoHere’s another new item from Robitronic today, this time it’s a brushless speed control for 1/8 scale electric vehicles. The Speedstar Brushless ESC is LiPo ready and has many features making it suitable for racing. It’s got selectable current limiting, adjustable power curves and motor timing, and adjustable brake. Reverse can also be disabled. The Speedstar can handle 6 – 14 cell NiMH batteries and 2 – 4S LiPO and LiFE packs, sensored brushless motors down to 4.5 turns and brushed (in 1/8 scale? why?) motors down to 7 turns.

For some more info, plus some news about a motor to go with it, check out Robitronic’s web site.

Robitronic’s been on a tear lately, releasing new and updated cars in a lot of different categories. The newest is a 1/10 scale monster truck that they call the Shadow. It’s a 2wd truck similar in style to the Traxxas Stampede or Losi Highroller. Some of the special features are full ball bearings, a 12 turn capable ESC, oil filled shocks, and a prepainted and trimmed body. The Shadow is targeted at beginners to the r/c hobby and comes RTR with a 27Mhz radio, requiring only batteries and a charger to complete. No word on MSRP or release timeframe, but they promise it to be economically priced.

Check out Robitronic’s web site for more details.

Losi has a couple new products out for you nitro lovers. If you have a vehicle with a .21 – .28 engine there’s a new accessory set to help keep your engine sealed up. The engine accessory kit includes a few vinyl caps to put over the carb and needle valves when you are putting your car in storage to help keep the crud out. There’s also some small spring clamps to hold the air filter in place instead of using zip ties, which Losi claims will make it quicker and easier to remove. Price should be somewhere around $7.99.

Another new part from Losi is the spool diff insert, it can be used in any Losi 1/8 scale vehicle, but it is intended to be used with the L8 Model and others that have been converted for dirt oval racing. The insert replaces the spider gears in the center diff, locking it, and that causes full power to be sent to the front and rear wheels all the time. You should be able to pick this up for around $12.99.

For more info about both of these products hit up Losi’s web site.

Owners of the Losi Mini Rock Crawler, your body options have just been expanded by one. Losi has taken their 1/10 scale Grappler Pro rock crawler body and shrunk it down to 1/18 scale. It’s clear so you can sling your own paint on it and have a custom ride that sets you apart from the pack. This new body is designed to allow for maximum suspension articulation without the interference that some other bodies cause. The 1/18 Grappler Pro comes with a decal sheet and window masks to aid in your customizing adventures. MSRP is $23.99, look for it on your local hobby shop shelves soon. More info can be found at Losi’s site.

Well, another April 1st has come and gone, and I think we made it out ok. I just wanted to say tanks for putting up with it all yesterday, and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. (tanks.. get it!? )

What's new: Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The crew from the Discovery Channel tv show Howe & Howe Tech are teaming up with Team Associated to put their revolutionary unmanned tank, the MS1 “Ripsaw” into the hands of us r/c hobbyists. Dubbed the Team Associated MS16 “Tabletop Saw”, this new r/c tank will feature AE’s new XP4-SS dual stick, 4 channel radio system, a pair of Reedy 4800kV brushless motors and specialized ESC, and will come packed with a Reedy 3S LiPo battery and charger. Early testing of the prototypes showed the MS16 reaching top speeds of nearly 50 mph.

The full-scale MS1 made headlines a few years ago for becoming the world’s fastest tracked vehicle and was even given the Popular Science Inventors award for it’s revolutionary design.

Unfortunately this new tank doesn’t appear to conform to ROAR’s rules on their new tank class, we’ll have to see if somebody releases some aftermarket bodies to bring it into compliance. It could be a dominator in the class.

For MSRP and release date check out Team Associated’s web site.

A good friend, and pretty reliable source just sent me an email saying Adam Drake was spotted yesterday at a test track in Pomona CA driving the recently rumored Losi 8-M1 tank! He was apparently seen driving both nitro and electric versions of the vehicle!

Drake was overheard saying that the Losi 8-M1 “pushes a little bit in the corners, but blows right through the jumps…”

Hopefully someone snapped a shot of it in action! If so.. please drop us a line.
