Monster Truck Madness – Resolutions

Hey all and Happy New Year! Ya know, I’m generally not a person for resolutions. I’m always of the mind that there’s no better day to make a change for yourself than today, and that’s whether it’s in the middle of July OR Jan 1.

However, I’ll admit that being a week into 2022, the time does feel ripe to put a few resolutions out there…especially when I’m literally putting them into words and posting on the Internet for all to see. It means I have additional accountability. So, with that said, here are some r/c  resolutions I have for myself in 2022.

Learn to Airbrush

This is the big one. I have been a hobbyist since the early 1990’s. I believe my first rattle can paint job was in 1994- a bright orange Traxxas Hawk 2. Since then, I’ve painted probably a hundred or more bodies. All with standard spray cans, though.

I think I’ve gotten pretty good at using them, but I’ve loooong been due to finally get an airbrush to take my painting up a notch.

Fun side story- I actually messed with airbrushing once. I believe it was around 2000 or 2001 I bought a cheap Testors Airbrush kit. It didn’t even have a compressor- it used canned air (if I remember right), and it went fantastic for the first 5 minutes or so….until a hose popped off the gun and paint shot everywhere in my parent’s kitchen. After that, I just stayed with paint cans.

That changes in 2022. I’m looking at various Iwata and Paasche kits that a few painting buddies have recommended, and will be making a choice soon. Once I do, I’ll talk about it here and you’ll see the results. I’ve got some monster trucks needing paint!

Attend a National Monster Truck Race

My second resolution is a simple one- I want to attend a national level solid axle monster truck race. Between balancing a full spring/summer Trigger King schedule with my other various personal interests and kid’s schedules, attending a large MT race always seems to evade me. I’d love to take in one of the big events that’s held in Virginia, New York, or Ohio (just to name a few) and this year I’m making it a point to get to one of them.

Compete in some No Prep Drag Racing Events

My favorite release last year was the Losi 22S Drag Car and after getting it all decked out and setup, cold weather arrived. She’s ready to rock and roll this year, though. Soon as the temps get warm and I can find a no prep race close, I’m gonna be there.

Goals, folks. Those are mine this year. Especially the airbrush one. I’ve been wanting to learn how to do it for years, and I’m out of excuses as to why I haven’t.
