Greetings everyone and welcome to another edition of Monster Truck Madness! The great looking retro truck that’s being shown off here was built by my friend Lonny Childress. When talking about the build with him, the subject of foams came up. Specifically, the lack of them. The conversation reminded me that it was something I wanted to touch on here! If you [...]
Greetings, o ye of the monster truck faith! This weeks Monster Truck Madness is a day early and a tad different, as I have an event report for you versus the standard blog post. The JConcepts King of the Monster Trucks event was held this past weekend at Vinyl Images in Fenton, MO (just outside St. Louis) and wow, what a [...]
Those of us with large collections of r/c’s all have a favorite rig, right? Mine would be my Blue Bomber. At some point I’ll do a full write-up on this monster, but for now I’ll give you the short of it. It’s a one-off prototype chassis that I rescued from the scrap heap a few years ago. It’s based on a Concussion [...]
Greetings gang, happy Tuesday. Today I come to you with an announcement! The JConcepts King of the Monster Trucks event is going to take place October 6-7, 2018 at Vinyl Images in Fenton, MO, and we’d love to see you there! If you’ve never taken part in a solid axle monster truck event before, imagine a full sized event that’s scaled down [...]
Leaving a camper around monster trucks is never a good idea, whether 1/10 or full size. My nephew and his buddies rescued an old pick-up bed camper awhile back, and they left it next to our r/c monster truck track on a trailer. I’m sure they thought it was a safe place to put it. Think again! As soon as we arrived [...]
In years past, the thought of Traxxas doing a solid axle monster truck would’ve been completely preposterous. The caretaker of the T-Maxx and Stampede would have zero interest in a project like that, right? I remember hearing the same talk as it pertained to Traxxas doing a proper scaler as well, and we see how that turned out. I think the [...]
This Saturday, June 2nd, is the BIGFOOT Open House in Pacific, MO! If you are a fan of monster trucks, it’s an event you won’t want to miss out on. BIGFOOT will be doing car crushes with several of their modern race vehicles and there will also be an old school leaf truck race! They will also have several classic [...]
Greetings folks, we are alllllmost to Memorial Weekend. And with that, I wanted to chat about flags. Scale flags, actually. Before we do that though, if you haven’t noticed over the last few weeks, Monster Truck Madness is now a weekly blog! Big thanks and good luck to our new guy Jeremy Griffith for taking over the Friday Scalin’ feature. He’s [...]
In Monster Truck Madness #6, which I wrote in February, I went into detail on how best to get started modifying your Axial SMT10. The time has come to talk about juicing one up even further than that. Back in April I made substantial changes to one of my two SMT10’s to bring it up to snuff with the “Pro Modified” category of [...]
Last week JConcepts announced a very cool new body for monster truckers- the “Grandma” 1951 Ford Panel Truck. One of the most iconic monster truck bodies of them all. No doubt several of you are curious as to what the “Grandma” is in reference to, though. The official press release gives a nod but isn’t explicit. “Grandma” is the nickname that [...]
One of the most popular monster truck themed questions I get is, “What’s better, a Clod or shaft truck?”. This is probably the most asked question in the solid axle community. It’s also a very tricky one to answer as both types of vehicles have significant advantages and disadvantages. While I cannot give you a definitive answer, I can tell you [...]
Few, if any radio controlled model kits have lived the life of Tamiya’s infamous Clodbuster. So, how does a vehicle that was released 30 years ago not only remain relevant, but also be arguably the most popular it’s ever been, save for maybe the early 90’s? I know that many non-monster truck people actively wonder this. For them, I’ll try and [...]
The more I do it, the more I realize that competitive r/c monster truck racing is a battle against myself, not the opponent. I think that’s why I love it so much. Before getting to that though, let’s talk about the nuts and bolts of the actual race format for those of you that are uninitiated. At the core of it, monster [...]
I’ve been waiting to do a big write-up on the Axial SMT10 for awhile now, so I figured after purchasing and modifying my second one (and with a third in the near future as well) it was high time I talked about it. Since I nabbed my first one back in August I’ve spent more time wrenching, driving, racing and freestyling [...]
Whether you have a Clod or shaft truck, differential preference seems to be the super important subject that no one really talks about. It’s just not as sexy as discussing, say, brushless options or what tires to use. Locked, open, one axle locked and the other open, limited slip…so many choices! Before getting into the r/c discussion, let’s talk about how [...]
