The Backyard – Builder Mode vs Driver Mode
Happy Friday and welcome to The Backyard!
As I sit here in the middle of building my JConcepts Reactor (more on that over in the revived Monster Truck Madness series – article 1 goes live within a couple days), it got me thinking about something I’ve noticed over the years.
When it comes to this hobby, I can be a bit of a split personality.
There are stretches of time where all I want to do is build.
Give me a fresh kit, a clean workbench, and a couple uninterrupted hours, and I’m perfectly content. Laying out parts, following the steps, figuring out how everything goes together—it scratches a very specific itch. It’s focused, it’s methodical, and it’s rewarding in a way that’s completely different from driving.
And then…
There are other stretches of time where the absolute last thing I want to do is be in the middle of a build.
You know the feeling. You’ve got a project half done, parts spread out, maybe a tricky step coming up—and instead of excitement, it just feels like work. In those moments, I don’t want to be turning screws. I want to grab something that’s already finished, throw a battery in it, and go run.
No thinking. No planning. Just drive.
It’s kind of funny how hard the pendulum can swing.
Right now, I’m firmly in builder mode. The Reactor showed up, I’ve already got a good chunk of it together, and I’m enjoying every bit of the process. It’s the kind of project where you actually want to slow down and take your time with it.
And that’s part of the rhythm of this hobby.
Some people are all-in on building. Some people are all-in on driving. But I think a lot of us bounce between the two depending on where we’re at.
One phase feeds the other.
After a stretch of running trucks, the idea of starting a fresh build starts to sound appealing again. After spending a bunch of time building, that first run becomes something you really look forward to.
It’s a cycle, and it keeps things from getting stale.
So for now, I’ll enjoy being in build mode. The Reactor is on the bench, the parts are going together, and there’s still a lot left to do.
But if you check back in a couple weeks and I’m suddenly talking about nothing but seat time?
Yeah… that’ll track too.
That’s it for me this week. Until next time, keep it on all 4’s.
