The Backyard – It’s All in the Rubber

Well, we’re officially here — the first real Friday of the new year. Last week doesn’t count; the working world was still half-awake and surviving on leftover Ferreror Rochers. But now? We’ve had our first proper Thursday release, and it’s a good one.

Axial just dropped the 1/30 Axial SCX30 Chevrolet K10, and wow — if you’re even remotely into old lifted iron, this thing looks incredible. There’s a very good reason for that, and it’s the main point I want to talk about this week. But before we get there, let’s zoom out and talk about the release as a whole.

First things first: it is so refreshing that this isn’t just another Jeep. I’ll say it — I’ve got Jeep fatigue. I’m completely Jeep’d out. Sure, throw a truly classic one my way and I might perk up, but modern Jeeps? I’m good. That’s just me.

So seeing an old-school Chevy C10, right in that late-’70s era that also gave us some of the best-looking Fords ever built, is a welcome change of pace. This is prime truck territory, and Axial leaned into it hard.

This version appears to be the more “high-trail” flavored SCX30 setup, what with that aggressive stance and the wheels and tires package. And that brings us neatly to the real star of the show.

The aforementioned wheels and tires.

Axial absolutely crushed it here.

The wheel-to-tire proportion, the sidewall “pooch,” and that Super Swamper license all come together perfectly. It’s one of those rare times where the stance, rubber, and wheels don’t just complement the body — they make the body.

Yes, the C10 shell looks fantastic on its own, but it’s the tires and wheels that sell the illusion. This thing looks like it rolled straight out of a vintage issue of Peterson’s Off-Road. Manufacturers often struggle to nail this particular lifted-truck look in scale form, but Axial absolutely stuck the landing here.

And I’ll admit it — I’m not usually a small-scale guy. But this lifted C10 might finally break me. That green? That stance? Yeah… I want one.

Big kudos to Axial on this release. It looks great, it feels intentional, and it’s landing at the perfect time of year. Winter is prime micro-crawling season, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this C10 brings a whole new wave of people into the SCX30 platform.

That’s it for me this week.

Until next time, keep it on all 4’s.
