The Backyard – Rally Fever

Greetings all, and Happy Friday!

If you’ve been reading The Backyard for a while, you might remember my column — “I’m Shocked That R/C Rally Racing Isn’t More Popular.” Well, it looks like the hobby gods have answered, because Traxxas just dropped a new rally machine that’s about as good a reason as any to check-out the category — the Mini Rally VXL Ford RS200.

I wouldn’t necessarily let the word “mini” lead you to think this is a tiny car. The RS200 is actually pretty close to 1/10 scale in size, which means it has a lot more presence on the bench and in the dirt than you’d expect. It might be compact, but it’s not small. Under the hood, you’ve got the proven Velineon brushless system, 4WD traction, rally-tuned suspension, and enough power to send gravel flying. And that RS200 body? It absolutely nails the legendary Group B look.

What I love about this release is that it looks like a car. We’ve had some decent rally cars in the recent past, but let’s be honest — a lot of them have that “bubble body” look….and that generic style does nothing for me. The RS200 brings back that sharp, iconic rally silhouette, and it’s refreshing to see something that blends speed, handling, and scale realism in one small, potent package.

Team Associated RC10 4x4 Rally Kit

And it’s not just Traxxas (re)investing in rally. Team Associated’s new RC10 4×4 1/10 Electric Off-Road Rally Kit also hit recently — a full kit that’s equally serious about both performance and looks.

Just earlier this week, the FTX RC 1/10th MK2RS Brushless Rally RTR was also announced, another rig that blends modern r/c performance under a retro-inspired body.

With all the recent attention on rally-style releases, it’s clear manufacturers are leaning into what makes this side of the hobby special — cars that look fast even when they’re standing still, and drive like they belong in the dirt.

If you’ve ever wanted to get into rally R/C, there’s never been a better time!

Until next time, keep it on all 4’s!
